Injury Prevention Instructor Program The Save Your Hands! program is now certifying qualified bodyworkers as instructors for its certified injury prevention instructor (CIPI) program. Graduates emerge knowing how to teach a comprehensive workshop on proper body mechanics, ergonomics, and self-care strategies for manual therapists. Certified instructors can present the workshop to others and use the knowledge to enhance their own practices. Certification involves taking a short online course worth 10 continuing education hours followed by an 18- hour hands-on workshop. The instructor course is NCBTMB-approved. Instructor Competency Standards Proposed The Alliance for Massage Therapy Education (AFMTE) announced plans to develop national teacher education standards in order to promote competency expectations for all bodywork instructors. The project results, in part, from a national survey AFMTE conducted in November 2010 that showed almost 81 percent support among MTs for competency- based national standards. AFMTE plans on developing the standards in five phases and estimates it will take between five and 10 years to complete. AFMTE is based in Virginia and is online at www.afmte.org. MTF Practitioner Case Report Winner Rosemary Chunco of Plano, Texas, is the winner of the Massage Therapy Foundation 2010 Practitioner Case Report Contest. Her case report was titled "The Effects of Massage on Pain, Stiffness, and Fatigue Levels Associated with Ankylosing Spondylitis: A Case Study." Chunco will receive $2,500 cash contingent on undergoing the peer review process with a scientific publication. Chunco's report focused on a 47-year-old female patient with a disease that causes inflammation of the joints between the spinal bones and the area between the spine and pelvis. With massage, the patient reported a reduction in the intensity of her stiffness, pain, and fatigue, and Chunco observed increases in forward and lateral flexion.
