Botanical Research Centers Win NIH Support Studies of the safety and effectiveness of botanical products are major focuses for five dietary supplement research centers selected to be jointly funded by the Office of Dietary Supplements and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, two components of the National Institutes of Health. The competitive awards, Massage Blogs of Interest approximately $1.5 million each per year for five years, were made to Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; University of Illinois at Chicago; University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign; University of Missouri, Columbia; and Wake Forest University Health Sciences, Winston- Salem, North Carolina. Skin Cancer Risks in Minorities Massage therapists should note findings of a new study about the likelihood of African-Americans and Hispanics to get skin cancer. While these groups are not often associated with skin cancer risks, the truth is skin cancer occurrences are higher in both demographics, but go underreported due to lack of early detection. A Florida study of more than 40,000 people found advanced cases of skin cancer in 12 percent of Caucasians, 18 percent of Hispanics, and 26 percent of African-Americans. MTs act as agents of early detection, because they often have visual access to the entire body over the course of a session, and therefore should be especially mindful when working with Hispanic and African-American clients. connect with your colleagues on massageprofessionals.com 17
