PLEASE EMAIL YOUR LETTERS TO EDITOR@ABMP.COM. Research Resources It never fails that I fi nd something I need to read or practice when I read a new or even an older Massage & Bodywork magazine. This time it is a reread of your article "Massage Therapy: The Invisible Profession?" by Diana Thompson [January/ February 2010, page 114]. I'm currently writing an appeal to an insurance company that has made a second denial of my claim … I can deal with the fact that maybe my SOAP notes are not the greatest (though they've greatly improved after this), but [the insurance company] cited that massage therapy has not been proven benefi cial for back and neck pain. They said there are not any clinical studies proving so and that PT [physical therapy] is the only way to go. After my anger cooled down a bit, I went on the search for research articles. I wanted to fi nd information that was not from massage, chiropractic, or other alternative medicine sources. Goodness, that took some time. One place I found was a site you noted: PubMed. I was happy to fi nd online that the Mayo Clinic had evidence-based studies, as well as the Sports Injury Clinic. I also used Medicinenet.com as another resource that muscles' mass and fl exibility can be increased in those over the age of 65. My client is in her 60s and in better shape than most 30–40 year olds I know—another stab at my ethics when her insurance company pointed out her age within the fi rst sentence. With all that, I'll be taking your suggestions of research a lot more seriously now … thank you again for your interesting and informative article. I wish you all the best.
