World Massage Conference Doubles Up The World Massage Conference will take place online June 7–8 and November 15–16, 2010. The event is simulcast by Web and telephone. In 2009, almost 12,000 practitioners registered. The conference features key figures in the profession, including Eric Dalton, Sandy Fritz, Whitney Lowe, Thomas Myers, and dozens more. New in 2010 is the addition of video and 24-hour-a-day broadcasting to accommodate the international audience. Participants can ask questions during presentations and through online chats, network with colleagues, and explore an interactive virtual tradeshow. Certificates of completion are available for continuing education credit. To attend free preconference broadcasts, visit Worldmassageconference.com. Qigong and Diabetes Twelve weeks of qigong therapy can significantly improve symptoms caused by type 2 diabetes, according to researchers at Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington. Their study examined 32 patients with type 2 diabetes and divided them into three groups. One group practiced qigong in weekly sessions, another performed progressive resistance training, and a third acted as a control. Only the qigong group showed significant reductions in blood sugar levels and fasting glucose levels. The research was published in the January 2010 issue of Diabetes Care. AAIM Integrative Medicine Certifications The American Association of Integrative Medicine (AAIM) released certification guidelines for holistic, natural, and complementary medicine practitioners. AAIM certification is available to massage therapists, reflexologists, reiki practitioners, and practitioners of many other complementary and alternative medicine modalities. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree or higher from a certified institution, a current license, and three years of related field experience.
