HOMEOPATHY REVIEW CHALLENGED Two new studies are challenging a famous and derogatory review of homeopathy published by The Lancet in August 2005. The review at that time compared clinical reviews of homeopathy with clinical reviews of traditional medicine and led the journal to decry homeopathy as nothing more than a placebo. Now studies of The Lancet's critique have found the methodology "seriously flawed" due to a misleading selection of homeopathy research in the initial survey and failure to reveal exactly which clinical trials were used in the comparison. The two rebuttal studies, published in Journal of Clinical Epidemiology and Homeopathy, found that the largest clinical reviews of homeopathy available at the time to The Lancet reported positive results that could not be attributed to a placebo effect. Yoga for Rheumatoid Arthritis Findings presented at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting show yoga greatly reduces joint swelling and tenderness in those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (RA). A study conducted at John Hopkins University took 30 RA patients and divided them into two different eight-week programs. One group attended weekly one-hour yoga classes and practiced at home, while the other group acted as a control, getting no therapy at all. The yoga group was taught deep breathing and relaxation techniques and led through yoga poses modified to accommodate RA limitations. At the end of the session, the group receiving no therapy reported no change in condition. The yoga group showed reduced joint swelling and less tenderness.
