This nerve is responsible for hundreds of important bodily functions, such as the regulation of heartbeat, muscle movement, and chemical and neurological responsiveness. In particular, researchers are now stimulating the vagus nerve to treat dozens of different inflammatory conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, hypertension, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, obesity, chronic fatigue, hepatitis, and even cancer. 7 Science is also crediting bioelectric medicine with futuristic treatments for psychiatric disorders, such as depression, schizophrenia, and more.
