There are phrases we massage therapists dread, such as "Can you
work deeper?" "I thought this was a deep-tissue massage," and "I want
it to hurt." You know what I'm talking about. You are in the middle of
a marvelous routine on a client's back, pouring your heart and soul and
hands into their muscles, and the client asks for more pressure. Fine,
you think. And you shift from your heel of hand to your forearm.
