Mind-Body Therapy Use Increasing Clinical use of mind-body therapies (MBT) such as meditation and deep breathing exercises are becoming more mainstream in the United States, say researchers at the Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Their study, published in the May 9, 2011, issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, show that one in 30 Americans using MBT had a medical provider's referral. Using information on nearly 23,000 households sampled in the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, the researches found that 3 percent, or just over 6 million Americans, sought MBT treatments on the advice of their physician. 2013 Research Conference Announced The 2013 International Massage Therapy Research Conference, presented by the Massage Therapy Foundation, will take place in Boston, Massachusetts, April 25–27, 2013. This third research conference, formerly known as the Highlighting Massage Therapy in Complementary and Integrative Medicine Research Conference, will bring together massage and manual therapy practitioners, allied health professionals, CIM researchers, educators, and others interested in massage research. A call for presenters and more details will follow in upcoming months. To learn more about this or previous conferences, or to join the mailing list, visit www.massagetherapyfoundation.org. NCBTMB Completes Job Task Analysis The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) released the results of its Advanced Practice Job Task Analysis (JTA). The analysis involved surveying nearly 10,000 massage therapists to identify the skills and abilities advanced practitioners should possess. The results will assist with the creation of a new National Certification for Advanced Practice (NCAP) exam, a voluntary certification that may give massage therapists more opportunities in traditional health- care programs. Ninety percent of the participants had more than five years of experience. The NCBTMB continues to evaluate the results to create a blueprint for the NCAP. For more information, visit www.ncbtmb.org.
