NEWS NOTES Steiner Leisure Limited Acquires Cortiva Institute One of the world's largest providers of spa services, Steiner Leisure Limited, has acquired the assets of Cortiva Group, Inc., one of the leaders in the postsecondary massage therapy education field. Steiner, which provides spa services on spas and cruise ships, adds Cortiva Institute's seven schools on 12 campuses to their own five schools on 18 campuses for an estimated student population of 5,200. The sale closed on November 7 for $33 million. "We are very excited to strategically expand the geographic footprint of our Schools Division with the addition of the highly respected Cortiva group," says Steiner President and CEO Leonard Fluxman. "We look forward to integrating Cortiva with our existing operations and welcoming the Cortiva team to our education group." International SPA Association Janet Kahn Appointed to National Advisory Group President Barack Obama has appointed Janet Kahn, PhD, research assistant professor at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine, to the Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health. Kahn has extensive experience in both traditional and integrative health care, including a former position as director of research of the Massage Therapy Consortium. She joins a "diverse group of licensed health professionals, including integrative health practitioners" who are tasked to "develop policy and program recommendations, and advise the National Prevention Council on lifestyle-based chronic disease prevention and management, integrative health care practices, and health promotion." Releases Annual Survey Results Results from the 2011 International SPA Association (ISPA) spa industry study show an increase in spa visits, revenue, and employees compared to 2010. Massage, offered in 88 percent of spas, remained the leading treatment received by spa patrons; only skin care services were offered in more spas (94 percent). The annual study, which focused this year on how the recession impacted spas and spa-goers, has been used since 2000 to develop a profile of the spa industry. Full results are available as a digital download for ISPA members or for purchase at www.experienceispa.com. Celebrate ABMP's 25th anniversary and you may win a refund on your membership.
