NEWS NOTES Hospitals Embrace Registration Opens for the American Massage Conference Online registration is open for the 2012 American Massage Conference, which will be held in San Diego, California, April 20–22. The 2011 conference drew more than 1,600 attendees from 43 states and three countries, and featured continuing education, presentations, workshops, a trade show floor, and networking opportunities. Registration for the 2012 conference is $40 and includes free one-hour continuing education presentations. In addition, one-day, two-day, and three-hour workshops are available at an extra charge. ABMP is the event's Global Education Sponsor and will host a Friday evening keynote featuring Deane Juhan, author of Job's Body. For more information, or to register, visit Americanmassageconference. com or call 877-387-9111. CAM Therapies In the United States, 42 percent of hospitals offer one or more complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies, according to a survey of 714 hospitals conducted by the American Hospital Association and the Samueli Institute. This is a 37 percent increase over a similar 2007 survey. The study also indicates that, where CAM therapies are offered, massage therapy is the most popular, being provided in 64 percent of outpatient settings and 44 percent of inpatient settings (reiki is offered in 21 percent of inpatient settings). Hospitals that responded to the survey cited patient demand and clinical effectiveness as the two main reasons for introducing CAM therapies. Full results are at www.samueliinstitute.org. For every one-hour massage or facial session, clinics donated $10 to the Arthritis Foundation. Massage Envy Therapists Raise $493,000 to Benefit the Arthritis Foundation Massage therapists and estheticians in franchises across the country teamed up to donate more than $493,000 to the Arthritis Foundation as part of Massage Envy's Healing Hands for Arthritis event. For every one-hour massage or facial session, clinics donated $10 to the foundation in an effort to positively affect the one-in-five adults and 300,000 children who suffer from arthritis. "We are so grateful that tens of thousands of people took action on World Arthritis Day by getting a massage or facial, because arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the nation," says Rick Bell, managing director of the Arthritis Foundation. compiled by Jed Heneberry Celebrate ABMP's 25th anniversary and you may win a refund on your membership.
