FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY Client Homework— Tip and Turn Neck Stretch 1. Sit or stand up straight and align your head over your shoulders. Palpating the Scalenes 1. Positioning: client supine. 2. Sitting at your client's head, locate the cervical transverse processes in the space between the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid. 3. Slide your fi ngertips inferiorly, following the slender, stringy fi bers of the scalenes. 4. Follow the fi bers of the scalenes to their attachments on the tops of the fi rst and second ribs. 5. Have the client gently resist lateral fl exion of the neck to assure proper location. 2. Tuck your chin slightly, then tip your head toward the left shoulder. 3. Keep your chin tucked and shoulders down as you turn your head to the right. 4. Breathe deeply as you stretch the muscles on the side of your neck. 5. Return your head upright, then repeat on the other side.
