Bodywork May Help
Substance Abusers A pilot study by researchers at the University of Washington suggests that bodywork may be effective as an adjunct to women's substance use disorder treatment. In the randomized clinical trial, weekly treatments of mindful awareness in body- oriented therapy (MABT) had moderate to large effects on participants. MABT is a combination of manual and mind-body therapy developed by Cynthia Price, PhD. Positive outcomes included fewer days of substance use, and decreased levels of anxiety, depression, eating disorder symptoms, and perceived stress compared with usual treatment. The report is available online at www.sciencedirect. com and will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment.
