Partnerships for Massage School Makeovers Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP) joined the World Massage Conference, Massage Warehouse, and other industry leaders in sponsoring a massage school makeover. School faculty, alumni, and current students can nominate and vote on their school at www.massagetoday.com. Voting will run through October 30. Selected schools will win a variety of products and improvements, including massage tables, chairs, and complete book and video libraries. Voters and nominators are also eligible to win individual prizes. ABMP is donating 10 student memberships and an instructor in-service for the winning school. Acupuncture and Breast Cancer Treatment Breast cancer treatments often cause severe joint pain that can be relieved by acupuncture, say researchers at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. Researchers tested acupuncture on 43 patients in a search for a non-pharmaceutical method of pain management. Researchers used a sham acupuncture control group for comparison. Those treated with acupuncture reported significant drops in joint pain, and 20 percent said they no longer needed any pain control medicine at all. The findings were published in the March 2010 Journal of Clinical Oncology. Thai Massage for Autistic Children A study of 60 autistic children between the ages of 3 and 10 shows Thai massage can help alleviate anxiety and improve conduct. Regular Thai massage sessions were found to be particularly beneficial because they require therapists to use their own bodies to put clients in yoga-like stretches, thereby increasing the level of physical interaction with the children. The study was conducted at the Rehabilitation Centre of the Thai Red Cross in Bangkok, Thailand, and its results were published in the December 2009 issue of Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. connect with your colleagues on massageprofessionals.com 17
