news notes COMPILED BY SEAN EADS Massage therapists are invited to hold grassroots events this year between Sunday, July 18, and Saturday, July 24. MASSAGE FOR HIV/AIDS A literature review published in the Cochrane Library promotes the use of massage therapy for sufferers of HIV/AIDS. Massage was found to boost quality of life among patients, particularly when paired with another complementary and alternative technique, such as meditation. The review involved two independent examiners looking over 12 studies published up to November 2009. The studies include age ranges from children to adults, and the disease spectrum ran from early HIV infection to late-stage AIDS. The reviewers recommend more trial research be conducted to follow up on the current findings. American Medical Students on CAM A survey of nearly 2,000 medical students from schools across the United States reveals a growing positive attitude toward complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and integrative therapies among the next generation of doctors. The Complementary, Alternative and Integrative Medicine Attitudes Questionnaire was developed by a panel of CAM specialists and included respondents from 51 percent of U.S. medical schools. The students were found to be particularly favorable to the mind-body connection of CAM therapies: 49 percent of those surveyed reported using CAM; massage was the top modality among users at 35 percent; and yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises were also popular. The full results and analysis are available at www.ecam.oxfordjournals. org/cgi/reprint/nep195v1.pdf.
