spotlight on education—the rossiter system BY KARRIE OSBORN "My work has been completely transformed by learning the Rossiter workouts. I believe this to be the most important information I've learned in 30 years in health care." Ruth Nottage Owner, Ripple Effect Massage Laramie, Wyoming 19 years in profession Single mother of three boys WHAT I DID BEFORE MASSAGE "My professional life began in 1980 as a licensed practical nurse (LPN), working everywhere from surgical wards to a mental hospital. I was interested in seeing if there was something out there that made more sense to me than the 'cut it off' mentality of allopathic medicine. In 1990, I saw an advertisement for a massage therapist—two weeks later I was in massage school! For many years I worked concurrently as an LPN, with my own private practice as an LMT. The day I made more in massage tips than I made in eight hours as a nurse was the day I resigned from nursing. And I've never looked back." WHAT IS THE ROSSITER SYSTEM? The Rossiter System is a series of two-person stretching techniques that quickly targets connective tissue, loosening and elongating it to restore range of motion and movement. The client, called the person in charge (PIC), and the therapist (the coach) work together to stretch and move the body. During the 20-minute workout, the PIC lies fully clothed on a floor mat. The coach uses only the weight of his foot to anchor the tissue, while the PIC hunts for her pain and works to push the stretch to its limit. This system was created by Richard Rossiter, a certified advanced Rolfer, who wanted to develop a technique that was more accessible and effective for clients in pain. MY CE EXPERIENCE WITH ROSSITER "I have always judged a CE class by what it does for me. After taking the Rossiter Unit 1 in early 2009, my plantar fasciitis was gone, my knee pain was reduced by 75 percent, and the long-standing pain in my right shoulder and neck was completely eliminated. I was hooked! Now I'm in training to teach Rossiter to others. I am on a mission to spread this work to as many people as possible."
