The agreement means the sole licensure exam for the profession will be the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) offered by FSMTB. This change does not affect therapists who are already licensed. Students or recent graduates who have already applied to take one of the NCBTMB exams can still take those exams for licensure, but they must take it by January 31, 2015. The move to a single exam is expected to facilitate licensure consistency and portability for new therapists entering the profession. The agreement was a common goal of leaders in the profession. For more information on FSMTB or the MBLEx, visit www.fsmtb.org. For more information on NCBTMB, visit www.ncbtmb.org. Watch for Scams Massage therapists are increasingly being targeted for Internet scams. One common form of this scam involves an out-of-town "client" contacting a practitioner via email to schedule an appointment. In many cases, the "client" wants to make appointments for a large group of people who are said to be visiting your area soon—a wedding party or a corporate event are common scenarios. After the booking is made, the practitioner receives a cashier's check or credit card payment in advance for these services, but it's "accidentally" for much more than the agreed-on price. The scammer then seeks a refund of the extra amount, usually in cash. If this happens to you, do not accept the payment and do not send the "client" a refund. Universal Companies Founder Honored Marti Morenings, founder of Universal Companies, was awarded the Visionary Leadership Award for Sustainability at the Green Carpet Spa Sustainability Awards in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in September. Winners were selected based on criteria including achieving the highest level of sustainability compared to their peers, continuous improvement, and setting an example for best practices. "I am greatly humbled and honored to be selected as the recipient of the Visionary Leadership Award for Sustainability," Morenings says. "I feel it is appropriate that I proudly share it with our dedicated team at Universal Companies. Their knowledge, ingenuity, and creativity has not only improved our own corporate carbon footprint, but it has allowed us to develop products and ideas that have made a signifi cant environmental impact on thousands of spas throughout the nation."
