Q&A What is CranioSacral Therapy? CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of the craniosacral system, which is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fl uid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system. Who can benefi t from CST? CST can be safely used on clients of all ages, from newborns to senior citizens. CST offers a safe and effective way to address a broad spectrum of conditions. CST complements the body's natural healing processes, and patients report improvement for a wide range of medical issues, including headaches, neck and back pain, post-concussion syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), central nervous system disorders, motor-coordination impairments, orthopedic problems, neurovascular or immune disorders, fi bromyalgia and other connective-tissue disorders, autism, learning challenges (such as ADD and ADHD), Alzheimer's disease and dementia, emotional diffi culties, and other ailments. Since the craniosacral system provides the environment for our central nervous system, CST can have profound effects on other common disorders, such as anxiety, asthma, and more. How is CST applied? CST is performed with the client fully clothed and lying on a comfortable massage table. Using a light touch that is usually about the weight of a nickel, the therapist evaluates or "listens to" the body for tension patterns and imbalances. Skilled CST therapists can enhance fl uid fl ow and balance membrane tension, helping bring increased vitality to the system. Releasing chronic tension patterns and enhancing fl uid motility allows the body's healing mechanisms to operate more effectively, imparting greater balance and ease. Where is the best place to enroll in CST training? Upledger Institute International, named for the developer of CST, is recognized worldwide as the leading provider of CranioSacral Therapy educational programs, advanced treatment options, and products. Dr. John E. Upledger, the developer of CranioSacral Therapy, had a vision and a passion to ensure CST would always be available to anyone who could benefi t from this gentle therapy. To fulfi ll his legacy, Upledger Institute International continues to offer classes in more than 50 countries, and now has more than 125,000 alumni.
