Q&A What is CranioSacral Therapy? CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of the craniosacral system—the body system that is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fl uid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch (generally no greater than fi ve grams, or about the weight of a nickel), practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system, which has been shown to improve the functioning of the central nervous system, as well as many other systems of the body, such as digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory, and more. How Was CranioSacral Therapy Developed? CST was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientifi c studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and professor of biomechanics. How Can CranioSacral Therapy Help? CST can be safely used on clients of all ages, from newborns to senior citizens. CST offers a safe and effective way to address a broad spectrum of conditions. By facilitating the body's natural and innate healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for helping people with a wide range of health-care challenges associated with pain and dysfunction, including autism, Alzheimer's disease and dementia, central nervous system disorders, head and neck pain, orthopedic problems, stress disorders, TMJ syndrome, traumatic brain injury symptoms, chronic fatigue, and many more. What is Upledger Institute International? Upledger Institute International, named for the developer of CST, is recognized worldwide as the leading provider of CranioSacral Therapy educational programs, advanced treatment options, and products. Dr. Upledger had a vision and a passion to ensure that CST would always be available to anyone who could benefi t from this gentle therapy. To fulfi ll his legacy, Upledger Institute International continues to offer classes in more than 50 countries, and now has more than 125,000 alumni.
